I look so ugly. How can I live up to it?
MirrorI think I know how you feel. There are times when we just can't stand our appearance. It is especially the case when we go through teenage years. A well-known Christian doctor, James Dobson, wrote that 80% of teenagers don't like their appearance and feel ungainly. See, you are not the only one!

Your body is changing very fast and maybe it doesn't turn out exactly as you want. Specialized doctors can help you with problems like pimples or weight. You need to be patient and accept all these changes. The final result might be much better than you expect.

Now let us step back and think for a minute.

How important is our appearance?
Television and friends are trying hard to convince us that it is essential.
But this is not what the Bible says. Fill in the chart and find out what really counts in God's sight. Boys, be ready to be compared to horses! Girls, be ready for some comments on your hair and jewellery!

For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
1 Samuel 16 Verse 7

Do not let your adornment be merely outward -arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel- rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.  1 Peter 3 Verse 3-4

He does not delight in the strength of the horse; He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man. The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, in those who hope in His mercy.
Psalm 147 Verse 10-11

Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
Proverbs 31 Verse 30

EyesYou see: what really counts is inside. Don't forget that when you look at yourself in the mirror. God can make you a great person. You first need to "fear" Him, that is to trust and respect Him. Then He will work deeply in your life through His Spirit and will develop beautiful inner qualities.

I'm sure your close friends will see them, will be impressed and challenged.

Only God can do that. Talk to the Lord about how you feel and ask Him to develop in you inward qualities. He can make a great person out of you!
