Getting rid of bad habits
Boy bitting nailsBad habits are hard to get rid of. Whether it be biting your nails, picking your nose, fidgeting with your hair, using bad language…
Trying to change a habit or an attitude can be quite a challenge. So what’s the secret to success?

In the Gospel of Luke chapter 11 verse 24 to 26, Jesus explains to the people around what happens when an unclean spirit is rebuked.
To help them understand what happens, Jesus compares the person with a house that has been cleaned of an evil spirit. Soon after, the unclean spirit comes back to his previous house, sees that it is empty and clean and invites more evil spirits to come in. The condition of the house ends up to be worse than before! How come? Because although the house had been cleaned, it had been left empty. The house had not been filled with the spirit of God.

Let’s take another example. If you had a virus on your computer and didn’t know what to do, you would probably call a friend to help you. But what if after the problem is solved, you forget to install an antivirus program? There’s no doubt that more viruses will come in and mess up your nice and clean machine. In the same way, your body is like a house or a computer that needs to be cleaned from bad habits, bad attitude, bad thoughts. But most of all, your life needs to be filled with the Spirit of God.

So if a computer needs an antivirus to get rid of all the bad stuff, what program do I need for my bad habits?

You can make good resolutions and try to change your life around on your own… or you can decide to ask God to help you.

If you’ve been struggling to get rid of a bad habit, here are a few things you can do :

  1. First of all, make sure you’ve got the right programme by putting your trust in God and asking him to help you. If you haven’t done this yet, visit the page “Know Jesus” in the top menu.
  2. Also make sure you’re up to date with God. There’s nothing better than a regular update with God to make sure you are in order with him. You can tell Him about your struggles, defeats and victories.
  3. God promises to send His Spirit in you. It is his spirit who will help you, comfort you, and change your habits so that they may be pleasing to God, to you and to others.
  4. Ask God for the strength to stay away from bad influence.
  5. Fill up your body and mind with good stuff rather than junk. Read your Bible, do your devotions, make friends with people who will influence you positively.
  6. P.U.S.H. (Pray Until Something Happens)
Remember: God created us and knows all about us. More than that, He has given his Son to die on a cross so that we could be free from sin.

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.
2 Thessalonians 2.16-17
